Earth Goddess

Earth Goddess costume I decided I wanted to do a new costume for Saturday at Norwescon 2000; I'd been meaning to make a new quick & easy gown, and this seemed like a good opportunity. The outfit was largely dictated by the color of the fabric (which was bought because it was on sale); I thought of it as a sort of dark "Queen of the May" look, and a friend referred to it as "earth goth."

The gown is made of a lightweight panne velvet in a deep purple color with a floral pattern in silvery-lavender. The sides and neckline are edged with purple satin ribbon. This gown is cut with a square neckline (that is a little bit too wide). Under the gown is a silver silk blouse found at Value Village, with the collar and cuffs turned under to give a more "Elizabethan" feel, and a full-length silver taffeta skirt with a slight train (which, alas, cannot be seen in the photos). The whole getup is cinched with a Frederick's of Hollywood black jacquard "corset."

The hair is a wig (you might have guessed that). The front plaits have purple ribbon (the same used on the edges of the gown) braided into them, along with fabric violets. A silver coronet, bought a few years ago from a dealer at a con, finishes it off. The torc collar, of silver and black star diopside, is from Angelwear Creations.

Makeup is mystical, dark and shimmery, to match the colors of the gown--purple and silver shadows, metallic silver eyeliner and mascara, and purple lipstick.
