Upon deciding to attend Norwescon
for the first time in 1992, I realized I wanted a costume, but didn't really
have anything. Remembering what I'd done for my Priestess costume
several years before, I decided to see if I could do a facsimile of a medieval
costume in a few hours without having to sew or spend a lot of money. This was
the result.
This photo was taken at Westercon in 1993, and is one of several variations of a basic shape, as described in my Quick 'n' Easy Medieval Gown instructions. In this version, I'm wearing the gown over a scoopneck bodysuit and ankle-length skirt (a combination that makes it easy to whip off the gown and pass for "normal" if necessary), and it's belted with a fringed crocheted chenille scarf. The shoes are blocky black suede flats with a vaguely medieval look. I bought the chain-mail headdress and silver torc from dealers at other conventions. Makeup is just normal everyday street makeup. I've worn this gown numerous other times, over other tops and bottoms, fastened with everything from a scarf to a full corset, and with a variety of headdresses and accessories. It's a very versatile piece, that can look regal, medieval, fantastical or alluring, depending on how it's dressed up. I'm planning to make another one soon, to have another quick costume option on hand. |
